Leichhardt (Queensland)

Leichhardt is a suburb of Ipswich in Queensland, Australia. It is located about three kilometers from the center of Ipswich and 43 miles from Brisbane. The name goes back to the explorer Ludwig Leichhardt from Prussia.

History

Originally called the territory of suburban One Mile, as it was a mile away from the main settlement. One Mile was originally a storage place for bullock drivers. Later, a hotel made ​​of wood there was built, which was, however, dismantled and placed on another site. From 1853 onwards, the area also Leichhardt was called because supposedly Ludwig Leichhardt had set up camp there during his first expedition. The land was used for agriculture since 1871 and built from the late 19th century buildings. 1925 One Mile park was created, called since 1930 Leichhardt Park. In 1956, the suburb was officially renamed to Leichhardt.
