Leo Duyndam

Leo Duyndam ( born January 2, 1948 in Poeldijk; † July 26, 1990 in Nice ) was a Dutch cyclist.

Achievements

Leo Duyndam was a professional racing driver from 1967 to 1975 and primarily successful six-day rider. 1968 and 1970 he became Dutch champion in the individual pursuit on the track. In 1968 he won the first place at Ronde van Limburg, in 1969 with the Elfstedenronde and at the Tour de Berne. At the Tour de France in 1972, he won the sixth stage.

Six Days

Duyndam started at 73 six-day races and won 16; eight of them with René Pijnen, and that, although the two athletes while driving skill, but not human harmonized. Duyndam described the relationship as " puur zakelijk ". In an interview in 2004 Pijnen described the problem: " Hij nam dit en een een pilletje before pilletje voor dat Dat is het begin het einde. " The two were still together in 1974 European Champion in a two - team driving; then it came after years of argument to the final break. A particular triumph for Duyndam was therefore winning the Six Days Rotterdam 1975 Gerben Karstens before Pijnen and Roy Schuiten. René was seriously ... and possessed ... Leo had no serious way of life ... ". Further victories arrive, inter alia Duyndam with Theo Verschueren, Gerben Karstens, Peter Post and Piet de Wit.

In the following season 1975/1976 it was not going well for Leo Duyndam, he gave up on several six-day race and found no sponsors. He therefore ended his cycling career at the age of 28 years.

Private

Leo Duyndam married his French girlfriend, moved to the South of France, opened several boutiques there and worked as a real estate agent. The couple had three children. On July 27, 1990, he suffered a heart attack in the swimming pool of his mansion and died at the age of 42 years.
