Léon Kauffman

Leon Kauffman ( born August 16, 1869 in Luxembourg, † March 25, 1952 ) was a Luxembourgian politician.

Life

Leon Kauffman in 1910 was director of the Tax Administration. From 1915 to 1945 he was a member of the State Council. In 1916, he was Director General (Minister ) of Finance ( until 1918 ).

1917 there was a crisis of government Thorn, as the Chamber had the Agriculture Minister Michel Welter deprived confidence. On June 19, 1917 Kauffman put together a right-wing government in which he took over the offices of the Heads of State, Foreign and Finance Ministers.

Under this government, the change of the Luxembourg Constitution was initiated, which should introduce universal suffrage among others. But It came to a conflict, as the government was reluctant to establish the origin of sovereign power " in the nation ," as it has called for the Chamber, instead, as by then, " in the person of the Grand Duke ." Then when it was announced that the Prime Minister a private audience with the German Chancellor at Grand Duchess Maria Adelheid attended, there was a reorganization of the government, prompting Leon Kauffman resigned on 28 September 1918 as prime minister.

From 1923 to 1952 Kauffman was President of the Board of Directors of Banque International à Luxembourg. In 1945 he became president of the State Council. In 1952, he died at the age of 82 years.

Leon Kauffman was married to Madeleine Joséphine Franck and had a son.
