The Leuven station ( Dutch Leuven station ) is a station of the NMBS / SNCB in Leuven. It lies on the railway line 36 between Brussels and Liege. With 27,000 passengers per day of Leuven train station is in fifth place of the busiest railway stations in Belgium. The station has 13 tracks. It would have a connection to the S -Bahn GEN Brussels.

History

Lion was connected to the railway network in 1837 as one of the first Belgian cities. On September 10, 1837 compound was prepared according to Mechelen and on September 22, 1837 link to Tienen. The new transport brought the hitherto flourishing passenger boat trip on the canal between lions and Mechelen to a standstill and caused the emergence of a new district near the train station.

The current station building was built in 1875 by architect H. Fouquet in eclectic style. The floor plan is symmetrical with large entrance building and two wings. While the exterior of the station is well preserved, numerous modernization work was carried out in the interior.

In August 1998, work on the integration of the station began in the high-speed line HSL 2 The station should be carried driving the future of high-speed trains without stopping at 160 km / hr.

Renovation

In the fall of 2000, the comprehensive renovation of the station started. Here, the space station was in the following years, redesigned, built a new bus station and a monumental canopy of the tracks consisting of sixteen white arches built.
