Lichtenberg is located on a hill high above the Selbitztal. The city belongs to the Franconian Forest nature park.

History

The origins of the castle date back to 814. Busy are the construction and expansion in the 12th century by the Dukes of Meranien. 1248 came place and castle inherited by the Counts of Orlamünde. In 1337, Lichtenberg was first documented and witnessed as a city. From the Late Middle Ages until 1792, the town belonged to the Principality of Hohenzollern between Brandenburg- Bayreuth. 1792 was the former Finance Department official Lichtenberg together with the Principality of Bayreuth to Prussia. In the Peace of Tilsit in 1807 Prussia joined the Principality of Bayreuth in France under Napoleon Bonaparte, and in 1810 the Principality of Bayreuth and thus the city Lichtenberg came to Bavaria. Lichtenberg has for more than 670 years, the city rights. It is one of the smallest cities in Germany and terms of population, the third smallest town in Bavaria.

Castle Festival

Every year in September there will be a medieval castle festival in the old town and in the ruins of the castle. The organization take over the castle friends Lichtenberg eV and Burg Lichtenberg Culture Association ( 2013) in a two-year change. The 13th Castle Festival on 7/8 September 2013 had about 8,000 visitors.

Structures
