Candidianus returned to communion with the Roman Church. Opponents of the ecclesiastical reunification elected a new patriarch, John I., who resided in the city proper Aquileia. Therefore Candidianus and his followers as the Patriarch of Grado ( qv) are called, although already Paulinus I. and his successors resided there. Officially, however, they always have, even beyond the end of the schism addition, the title of Patriarch of Aquileia continued until it was combined with the title of Bishop of Venice to that of the Patriarch of Venice.

The now listed Patriarch of Aquileia (ie those that are also referred to as such ) have indeed often later resided in other cities.

Patriarchy is divided between the archdioceses of Udine and Gorizia. The title is merged with the Patriarchate of Venice.
