Lochside distillery

Lochside was a whiskey distillery in the town of Montrose, Angus, Scotland. It is not to be confused with the eponymous whiskey distillery which consisted in Campbeltown 1830-1852.

History

The Lochside distillery was originally founded in the beginning of a 19th century brewery ( Deuchars Brewery ). This was closed in 1957 and Joseph Hobbs converted the business into a whiskey distillery. He installed first on a 20 m high Coffey Still, an installation for the inexpensive production of grain whiskey, which was the only product of the distillery in the early years. Subsequently, each two coarse blisters ( wash stills ) and fine blisters ( spirit stills ) purchased, which allowed the production of malt whiskey. In 1973, the distillery was acquired by the Spanish company Destilerias y Crianza del Whisky. In 1992 the distillery was closed in 1994 and sold to Allied Domecq. However, it was never reopened. First, the connected warehouse was demolished in 1999 and finally in 2005 the remaining buildings.

Production

The water used came from a groundwater well. For the production of Grain Whisky a Coffey Still was installed. Malt whiskey was burned over two pairs of wash and spirtit stills.

Samples

A large part of the whiskey was produced for the production of blends, particularly in Macnab 's Blend used. However, there were regular estate bottled as single malts as well as various bottlings independent bottler, which are still sometimes be found in stores.
