Lolo Sainz

Manuel " Lolo " Sainz Márquez ( born August 28, 1940 in Tetuan, Spanish Morocco ) is a former Spanish professional basketball player, coach and functionary. As a player, the point guard with Real Madrid won the European Cup four times the national champion. But he was especially known as one of the most successful by Title basketball coach in history.

Lolo Sainz, who was born in Tetuan in the former Protectorate of Spanish Morocco, moved early to Madrid, where he began with the basketball sport in school Colegio Ateneo Politécnico. In 1955, at the age of 15 years, he moved to the youth of Real Madrid and rose through the farm team CD Hesperia finally in 1959 in the first team on. National

Lolo Sainz took part with Spain to the European Championship finals in 1961, 1963 and 1965, but a podium failed his country selection. In the Mediterranean Games in 1963 in Naples, he reached the finals with Spain, where his team defeated the hosts Italy with 91:97. Overall, it brought Lolo Sainz on 68 missions in the national team.

Coaches and officials

Already parallel to the player's career Lolo Sainz began working as a youth coach in a nearby Claretian school. In 1969 he took over the post as youth coach at Real Madrid. After a short stage at the Madrid club Club Vallehermoso in the 1972/73 season, he returned as an assistant coach back on the side of Pedro Ferrandiz his parent club. After two years of him in 1975, eventually handing over the reins of the first team. Lolo Sainz could build on the successes of its predecessor and brought his team in the first season victory in the Championship and the Intercontinental Cup. In 1989, Lolo Sainz took over the post of sporting director, leaving George Karl the post of head coach.
