Longboat Key is a city on the eponymous island in the Manatee and Sarasota counties in the U.S. state of Florida with 6,888 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Longboat Key consists of an island, which the Sarasota Bay is separated from the open Gulf of Mexico. In the southeast of the city adjacent to Sarasota and to the northwest by Bradenton Beach. The town is located about 80 km south of Tampa.

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 6,888 inhabitants distributed to 8,814 households. The population density was 542.4 inh. / Km ². 98.4 % of the population were white, 0.2% African American, 0.1% Native American and 0.7 % Asian Americans. 0.1 % were members of other ethnic groups and 0.4 % of various ethnicities. 1.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 77.0 % of all households lived in 3.1% of all households with persons at least 65 years. 65.4 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 1.77 persons and the average family size is 2.12 people.

3.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 2.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 14.4% were 40-59 years old and 79.8 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 70 years. 46.3 % of the population were male and 53.7 % female.

The average annual income was $ 100,076, while 5.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 94.57 % of the population spoke Spanish 2.06% and 3.37 % had a different mother tongue.

Traffic

The Florida State Road 789 connecting the barrier islands of Anna Maria Iceland and Longboat Key with Sarasota. The Sarasota -Bradenton International Airport is around 10 km away.

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 79 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the low range. There was an assault, 24 burglaries, 94 thefts and car theft.
