Lubna Azabal

Lubna Azabal (born 1973 in Brussels, Belgium ) is a Belgian- Moroccan- Spanish actress.

Biography

Azabal is the daughter of a Moroccan and a Spaniard. She was educated in three languages ​​( French, Spanish and Berber ). In addition, she is fluent in English and Arabic.

Lubna Azabal visited Brussels in both the private drama school de Kleine Academie and the Royal Conservatory of Brussels ( Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles) and began her acting career working in the theater.

In 1996, she received her first role in a movie. In 1997, she was occupied by Belgian director Vincent Lannoo for his short film J'adore le cinéma. Then she moved to Paris and played mainly in French cinema and TV productions.

She was known primarily for her role in the Palestinian political drama Paradise Now, the Audience Award at the Berlin Film Festival and the 2006 Golden Globe won in 2005 and was nominated for the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

After the great success of Paradise Now her roles in English-language big-budget movie productions were offered. In 2008, she first received a minor role opposite Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe in the U.S. thriller The Man Who Lies, 2011, she then played alongside Gerard Butler, Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave in the British period drama Coriolanus.

In 2011 she gained international attention again when she was named Best Actress in Incendies at the Genie Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Academy Awards. The drama won eight Genie Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and was nominated in the same year for the Oscar for best foreign language film.

In 2009 she moved from Paris back to Belgium.
