Luxe-Sumberraute
Luxe Sumberraute (Basque Lukuze - Altzumarta ) is a commune with 338 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Pyrénées- Atlantiques in the Aquitaine region. It belongs to the district of Bayonne and the canton of Saint-Palais.
Luxe Sumberraute part of the Pays de Mixe in the Basque province of Lower Navarre. Neighboring municipalities are: Labets -Biscay to the north, Amendeuix - Oneix and Garris in the east, the west and Béguios Beyrie -sur- Joyeuse in the south.
History
The place name Luxe occurred in the past in the following forms: Luxa (12th century), Sancta Maria de lucse ( 1160 ), Luc ( 1249 ), Lucxa ( 1264 ) Luxa ( 1264 ), Luixe (13th century), Lucxa ( 1384 ), Nostre - Done de Lucxe ( 1472 ) and Lixe (1650).
The place name Sumberraute occurred in the past in the following forms: Sanctus Martinus de Alzumberraute ( 1160 ), Alçumbarrauta ( 1268 ), Alçunbarraute (1350 and 1412 ), Alsumberraute ( 1472 ), Alçumbarrate ( 1513) and Azumbarraute ( 1621).
Luxe Luxe was the capital of the county, which belonged to the Kingdom of Navarre in the Middle Ages. In the 18th century Luxe was a sovereign principality in the possession of the house of Montmorency. Luxe and Sumberraute were merged on 27 June 1842.
