Mad Dogs & Englishmen

Mad Dogs & Englishmen is the title of a tour and the eponymous live album and concert film of the British Blues-/Rocksängers Joe Cocker.

Album

The album was released in September 1970 following the same tour. It was released by A & M Records ( 6002 ). The songs were recorded in Bill Graham's legendary Fillmore East on 27 and 28 March 1970 by the equally legendary recording engineer Edwin Kramer. In Britain, the disk space reached 16 in the U.S. even number 2 in the album charts. In the original version of the album consists of two LPs, which are available on a CD today. In November 2005, also a deluxe edition was released on double CD. This edition also contains 12 unreleased demos, studio and concert recordings of the tour.

Importance and backgrounds

Joe Cocker's manager Dee Anthony had already posted the complete tour, as Cocker decided due to private problems, call it off. The sudden success and countless previous tours, he was under considerable stress. Thus Cocker dissolved his Grease Band. Since Anthony threatened to sue him for breach of contract, Cocker still had to agree the tour. Then Cocker contacted music producer and session musician Leon Russell, who put together a 21 -piece band with several drummers, guitarists, brass and percussionists within a few days. The team that Russell gathered around Joe Cocker, consisted of a 10 -member choir and 11 renowned professional musicians. Among them were, for example, Chris Stainton, Jim Price, Rita Coolidge and members of the band Delaney & Bonnie (Bobby Keys, Jim Keltner ) and Derek and the Dominos. This spontaneously assembled big band in the back, which ranks as one of the best bands that Cocker has ever had, the singer went on to unexpected peak shapes.

The tour started on March 20, 1970 in Detroit under the name " Joe Cocker, Mad Dogs & Englishmen ". It lasted 56 days and brought the 50 - member crew, which consisted of the musicians, their families, technicians, roadies, groupies and a complete film crew through 48 cities in the United States. The tour ended on May 16 in San Bernardino ( California). Move resembled the boisterous community a big hippie commune; for Cocker it meant despite great performances a further mental and physical decline, which he promoted with significant drug abuse. Financially, the tour was also a disaster.

The vibrant yet chaotic atmosphere of the concerts are both in the film and on the album and were immortalized because of their integrity in the history of rock music. The track list consists mostly of cover versions of famous hits this time, which are presented with a lot of passion and gospel feeling.

The idea for the album title had the producer Denny Cordell. It is a quote from a satirical song by Noel Coward in colonial times ("The japanese do not care to, the chinese would not dare to, but mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" ).
