Maintenon

Maintenon is a commune with 4446 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Eure- et- Loir, Centre, about 60 kilometers southwest of Paris, some 17 kilometers northwest of Chartres. It lies on the banks of the Eure in the fertile landscape of the Beauce.

History

In the Middle Ages Seigneurie Maintenon was part of the territory of the Counts of Montfort and was devastated during the Hundred Years War and during the First Huguenot War. After Maintenon had been raised 1595unter his master Charles Louis François d' Angennes the Barony, reached Charles Louis ' son in 1641 the collection of ownership for the Marquisat.

As Françoise d' Aubigné, later mistress and secret wife of Louis XIV, the reign along with moated castle in 1674 bought, she got the King in 1688 to a Marquisat with peerage (French: marquisat - pairie ), after his former owner today, especially among the name of Madame de Maintenon is known.
