Maitland, New South Wales

Maitland is a city in the Australian state of New South Wales and is located about 30 km northeast of Newcastle. It is located in the Hunter Valley right on the Hunter River.

Maitland was founded in 1820 and has about 61 000 inhabitants. As early as 1801 the largest coal reserves New South Wales was southwest of the city discovered and intensively mined from the mid-19th century. Maitland became the coal center and transit point for coal and goods from the Hunter Valley. Until the Gold Rush was the second- largest city in Australia and is still today one of the largest inland cities in the country. Today, coal mining has shifted and now plays only a minor role and Maitland is often considered only as an offshoot of the larger neighboring town of Newcastle.

In the early years, Maitland frequently of great floods affected, destroyed large parts of the city. In the last 50 years, the city has remained thanks to appropriate preventive action spared major flooding.

Maitland is the center and the administrative seat of the local administrative area in Maitland City within Großnewcastle
