Malans, Haute-Saône

Malan is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Malan is at an altitude of 205 m above sea level, 3 km southeast of Pesmes and about 33 km west of the city of Besançon (air line). The village extends to the south of the department, a slight increase on the northern edge of the valley of Ognon, north of the ridge of the Massif de la Serre.

The area of ​​6.75 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the lower Ognon Valley. The southern boundary runs mostly along the Ognon. This flows here with several turns west through a flat area which has a width of about three kilometers and is on average 195 m. It is used primarily for agricultural purposes. From the river, the municipality's area extends northward over the valley and a gently rising slope to the adjacent, slightly undulating plateau. These hills are composed of Tertiary sediments. With 280 m is achieved on the back of Le Chanoy the highest elevation of Malan. To the north of the municipality floor extends to the forest area of ​​the Bois du Gatis.

Neighboring communities of Malan are Pesmes in the north, Bard- lès- Pesmes and Bresilley in the east, the south and Thervay Dammartin- Marpain in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages Malan belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. The local government had held the Lords of Pesmes. The village church was confirmed in Auxerre in 1153 by the Pope to the monastery of Saint- Germain. In the 13th century a hospital was founded. Together with the Franche -Comté Malan came with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Malan is a member of the comprehensive 18 villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Val de Pesmes.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Laurent, originally dating back to a building from the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 19th century in the shape of a Latin cross. It has a rich interior, including stone sculptures and wooden statues from the 16th century, a richly carved pulpit and paintings from the 18th century.

West of the village, two castles. The Château de Malan from the 16th century was extensively restored in the 19th century and changed. Something more recent is the second castle, the Château Sainte Marie from the beginning of the 19th century (built by the inventor of the steamboat, Claude -François- Dorothée, marquis de Jouffroy d' Abbans ). In its park is a collection of more than 50 conceptual and concrete monumental sculptures. Adjoining the park, have the community Malan and the club Association Ile kind set up in the autumn of 2012 with the Ile kind Malan's another sculpture park.

Population

With 134 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Malan is one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Haute- Saône. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 402 persons were still counted ), only relatively small variations were recorded in the last decades.

Economy and infrastructure

Malan was well into the 20th century, a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ) embossed village. Today, there are some establishments of local small businesses. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in the larger towns in the area and agglomeration in Besançon.

The village is situated away from the larger passage axes on a secondary road that leads from Pesmes after Thervay. The nearest links to the A36 motorway is located at a distance of about 14 km. Further road links exist with Bresilley and Bard- lès- Pesmes.
