Malcolm Nokes

Malcolm Cuthbert Nokes ( born 2 May 1897 in Edmonton, Greater London, † November 22, 1986 in Alton, Hampshire ) was a British athlete who had specialized in the hammer throw. He started for the Achilles Club.

Nokes won four national championships in a row:

At international level, he was successful. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924, he won the bronze medal with 48.87 meters just ahead of the Finn Erik Eriksson. Gold and silver went with lengths of over 50 m in the U.S. American Fred Tootell ( 53.29 m ) and Matt McGrath ( 50.84 m). Four years later, in Amsterdam, he was again at the start, but could be with 45,37 m not qualify for the final of the best six throwers and finished eleventh.

His biggest success he was able to celebrate at the Commonwealth Games. 1930 in Hamilton ( Ontario) and in London in 1934, he won with jumps of 47.13 m and 48.25 m respectively the gold medal; 1930 added a fifth place in the discus.

Profession

Nokes was a graduate of the University of Oxford. First, he taught chemistry at Malvern College and at Harrow School. Later he worked at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell and at a laboratory of CENTO in Iran.
