Mammillaria elongata is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family ( Cactaceae ). The epithet of the species is extended.

Description

Mammillaria elongata forms upholstery with extended - cylindrical stems that reach 1-3 inches in diameter. Your warts are slender cone-shaped, their axils ( almost) bare. The central spine is usually lacking, but rarely two yellow to brownish provided with darker tip central spines are present, which are between 10 to 15 millimeters long. The 10 to 25 radial spines are white to golden yellow, slender and needle-like. They have a length of 4-9 mm.

The pale yellow to slightly pink flowers are up to 10 mm long and in diameter. The first pink fruits are red and later contain brown seeds.

Distribution, systematics and hazard

Mammillaria elongata is common in the Mexican states of Hidalgo, Guanajuato and Querétaro.

The first description was in 1828 by Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame.

There are two subspecies:

  • Mammillaria elongata subsp. echinaria (DC) D.R.Hunt: The first description was in 1829 as Mammillaria echinaria by Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame. David Richard Hunt presented the way in 1997 as a subspecies of Mammillaria elongata. The subspecies has two to three dark-colored central spines that are up to 1.5 inches long. It can be distinguished more synonyms to the subspecies.
  • Mammillaria elongata subsp. elongata: The nominate has no central spines, isolated two short usually. It can be distinguished more synonyms to the subspecies.
