General

Under the name of Lion's City low-floor variants for the urban and rural transport are summarized, of which the type A20 since 1996, which is produced as standard A21 since 1997 and the A23 since 1998. The name of Lion's City first served only the marketing of low-floor family, in September 2004, he was introduced as the trade name. Simultaneously, the models were subjected to a face-lift. The derived from the Lion's City Lion 's Regio is the Kombibusvariante for the overland line traffic as well as for excursions and transfer services.

Development

In September 1995, MAN presented with the rural- type A20 before his first coach of the second -generation low-floor. The A21 was introduced in 1997 as a successor to the bus - type A10. After the appearance of the competitive model Mercedes -Benz Citaro, whose design was viewed by the press as a successful, MAN In 1998, an optically revised series on the market. At the same time appeared with the A23 a design as articulated bus, which replaced the A11. In 2000, the two 15-meter versions A25 ( suburban ) were A26 ( city bus ) and out. In the same year the A76 appeared as the first of several Midibus variants that are produced in Göppel. For the Italian and Spanish markets, the three-door 12 - meter bus A37 Lion's single was developed in 2002 with the engine in tower design and super single tires on the rear axle.

In addition to the extension of the offer by two low-entry versions and a double-decker bus all previous models were presented in a visually and technically revised form in the fall of 2004. Since then, the vehicles under the name Lion's City offered. The end of 2005 came with the A47 out a 10.5 -meter-long midi bus, which was built by MAN and unlike the Göppel variants has the standard width of 2.5 meters. As a sister model of the Neoplan N 4522 from the largely identical series Centroliner Evolution was released in 2006 extended the Lion's City GL articulated bus. In May 2007, the four-axle, 20.5 meter articulated Lion's City GXL was presented. However, since the buying interest was below expectations, the model did not go to series. The demonstration was sold as a single built copy to the transport companies of the city of St. Gallen. The the high-floor vehicle Lion's Classic lookalike low-entry buses Lion's City T TÜ and 2008 were adapted to the design of the rest of the model range and renamed Lion's City LE or LE Ü. Since 2009, the 13.7 meter long model Lion's City C is designed for the Swedish market, available. In addition to this model, the three-axle models, with the exception of the Lion's City DD were also supplemented by low-entry versions.

Since 2012, with the exception of the articulated variants a first charge-requiring ESP available. A year later, it is included in the standard equipment.

Production

The majority of the MAN low- floor buses will be manufactured in the Polish plants Starachowice ( chassis, body shop) and Sady ( final assembly). The double-decker Lion's City DD are built in the MAN coach Plauen plant and then transferred to Pilsting to VISEON where the interior is done. The two low-entry variants Lion's City LE and LE Ü come from Ankara (Turkey).

The originally concentrated at the site of production of MAN low -floor buses in Salzgitter was set in mid-2008. Today there chassis for high-floor buses are only being built. After the construction of the bus plant at Sady (1998) and Starachowice (2001) is since 2004 the vast number of city buses from Poland. In Salzgitter still between 200 and 300 Lion's City last year were completed, mostly alternative fuel vehicles and / or optional equipment.

The Lion's City range includes the following models. Until the introduction of the revised versions under the name Lion's City in 2004, the buses were sold under the specified model name, its three-digit number minus 3 of the engine performance in hp corresponds ( as is, for example NG 363 for low-floor articulated the 3rd Omnibus generation with an engine power 360 hp).

Drive

In addition to diesel engines, the Lion's City is from the outset with natural gas and LPG engines available. For buses powered by natural gas MAN is the market leader. A larger fleet of natural gas vehicles is eg HTM, Veolia and Connexxion in the Netherlands, with Arriva in Sweden, at Tide Buss in Norway or at Stadtwerke Augsburg (excluding natural gas vehicles ) and the VAG Nuremberg in use. The fleet of the Wiener Linien consists exclusively of LPG vehicles, which is the majority of MAN.

In addition, MAN was involved in several pilot projects on low-floor buses with fuel cells or hydrogen combustion engine. From 2006 to 2009 ran the occasion of the European project HyFleet CUTE last 14 Lion's City H2 with hydrogen combustion engine at the Berlin Transportation Company ( BVG). They laid back about 8500 km and had taken up the regular service during the year 2006 in Berlin -Spandau. 2009 informed the manufacturer MAN, abandon the project due to increased defects.

In the years 2001/2002 MAN tested in Nuremberg the first diesel-electric hybrid bus with ultracapacitors in regular service. From 2005 to 2008 found more experimental farms instead of refined prototypes. After pre-production vehicles, among others since 2010 in Munich and Vienna are in use, began in 2011 the series production of the Lion's City Hybrid. The articulated variant Lion's City Hybrid G was planned for 2012, but did not appear.
