Marc-André Hamelin

Marc- André Hamelin ( born September 5, 1961 in Montreal ) is a French-Canadian pianist and composer.

Life

He studied in Philadelphia with Yvonne Hubert, Harvey Wedeen and Russell Sherman and is considered one of the leading pianists of our time. He is regarded by some as the technically best living pianist.

He is especially dedicated to the works of little-known composers of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also plays the international standard repertoire. He is known to play rarely performed pieces with extreme technical and interpretive difficulties ( such as Godowsky, Ornstein, Roslawetz, Catoire, Ives and Sorabji ). Caused a stir his interpretations of works by Charles Valentin Alkan and Paul Dukas. He has also recorded as one of three pianist Leopold Godowsky's 53 Studies on Chopin's Etudes by F.. This recording was awarded in 2000 the Gramophone Instrumental Award.

For the label Hyperion he has recorded many albums, including works of these composers as well as works by Albeniz, Brahms, Busoni, Chopin, Eckhardt - Gramatté, Grainger, Haydn, Kapustin, Liszt, Korngold, Marx, Medtner, Reger, Shchedrin, Shostakovich, Schumann, Scriabin, Szymanowski and Villa - Lobos.

Hamelin also occurs as a composer of piano music in appearance. In the years 1986-2009 he created a cycle of twelve etudes in all the minor keys (12 Études in all the minor keys), he Rarities of Piano Music Complete aufführte in Husum in the context of the music festival on August 23, 2010 for the first time. In 2010 he played the etudes as well as other original compositions on the CD a " Études ". His Variations on a Paganini - theme ( " Variations on a theme of Paganini " ) from the year 2011, he brought 22 August 2011 also in Husum for première.

In Germany so far his Original Compositions were laid in the Tradition of Nancarrow.
