Marcelo Delgado

Marcelo Delgado ( born March 24, 1973 in Capitán Bermúdez ), also known by the nickname El Chelo, is a former Argentine football player at the position of the striker.

Life

Delgado began his professional career in 1990 with Club Atlético Rosario Central, a club from the Santa Fe region where he was born and grew up.

In 1994 he moved to the CD Cruz Azul in the Mexican League, but returned already back after a year in his homeland, where he stood in the following four and a half years at the Racing Club under contract.

At the turn of 1999/2000 he made the " leap" of Avellaneda over the Río Riachuelo to La Boca and played from early 2000 until mid-2003 for the Boca Juniors with whom he at this time three times the Copa Libertadores (2000, 2001 and 2003), the South American equivalent of the European Champions League, and even the world Cup won (2000 with a 2-1 win over Real Madrid). Also in the World Cup final in 2001 against Bayern Munich, he was in the starting line-up, but was a tragic player who was primarily responsible for the defeat of his team. Been cautioned with yellow, he came just before the half-time whistle in the area of Bavaria one, played around the meet him falling Oliver Kahn - and dropped. Instead of the expected penalty he received the yellow card and had to leave the pitch early. From this point on Boca had to outnumbered on the defense of the 0:0 limit and lost a goal by Samuel Kuffour in the 109th minute game 0-1 in extra time.

After Delgado had again stood by the end of 2004, Cruz Azul under contract, he returned back to the early 2005 Boca Juniors and won with them other tracks. He then played for Belgrano de Córdoba and ended his active career in 2008 at the end of Ecuadorian Barcelona Sporting Club.

Together with the Brazilian Ricardo Oliveira from final opponents FC Santos, who also scored nine goals in this competition, Delgado was top scorer in the Copa Libertadores 2003.

In addition, Delgado came to 18 sessions for the Argentine national team; among other things, he belonged to the Argentine squad at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the Football World Cup 1998.
