Maria Teresa, Grand Duchess of Luxembourg

María Teresa Mestre Batista ( born March 22, 1956 in Havana, Cuba) is the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg.

Career

She was the daughter of José Antonio Mestre Álvarez ( born 1926 ) and Maria Teresa Batista y Falla ( 1928-1988 ) to the world. Her parents left Cuba in October 1959 and went to New York City. A few years later they moved to Geneva, where Maria Teresa visited various schools in 1975 her Abitur in 1980 and completed her studies in political science.

Her native language is Spanish, also speaks Luxembourgish, French, German, English and Italian.

Volunteering

Since 1997, Maria Teresa is a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and is involved in development aid. It particularly supports Muhammad Yunus, the founder of microcredit, as well as the War Remnants Kim Phuc of Vietnam, which also now works as an ambassador of goodwill. At Grand Duchess Maria Teresa's concerns in development aid include the care of AIDS orphans in Africa as well as the commitment against the use of child soldiers and human trafficking. Since early 2005 she has been President of the Luxembourg Red Cross, she also sits a Luxembourg Foundation to support cancer research before and is patron of the Luxembourg section of the children's charity SOS Children's Village. She is a member of the Honorary Committee of the Paralympics and campaigns against child abuse on the Internet.
