Mark Wood (violinist)

Mark Winthrop Wood (born 20 century ) is an American violinist who plays almost exclusively electric violin. He is a founding member and was head of the string instrument musicians of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. He is also the founder of Wood Violins, which produce electric violins.

Biography

The early years

Wood grew up in Long Iceland. His mother was a pianist and his father an abstract painter. At the age of 12 years Wood played the violin, taking lessons from Dr. Richard Rusack of the " Paul D. Schreiber High School " in Port Washington / New York. While still at school he formed with his three brothers, the string quartet " The Wood String Quartet". They toured the northeastern United States and played works by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Because Woods growing skill on the violin, he received a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music and studied with the Violin Teacher William Lincer.

With the Juilliard scholarship in the luggage and after a short stay in Boston Wood returned home. He said; He spent five years in the studio of his father, and taught himself to improvise and improve the violins. Mark says that he applies these techniques and practices today.

Musician and composer

Wood is a founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and was there for over 13 years until 2009 active musician. The large number of musicians with whom he played or with which he is represented in various CDs, is considerable. He played with Céline Dion, Billy Joel, Steve Vai, Lenny Kravitz, Jordan Rudess, Derek Sherinian, Simon Phillips, Glenn Hughes, Mike Portnoy, James Labrie, Steve Morse, Steve Vai, Dee Snider, Paul Ranieri, etc. Some of them worked with Mark on the ELP tribute album " Knife Edge " from 1999.

Wood was awarded the Emmy for the musical composition the 2002 Tour de France. Parts of the compositions for the electric violin quartet " Nest of Vipers " are also from him. The musicians of this violin quartet came again from the Juilliard School, who also belonged to Wood.

Luthier

Wood's company " Wood Violins" manufactures custom electric violins, cellos and pseudo rock star clothing. Wood began with 12 years to build his first violin.

Teacher

Wood visited many schools in the United States with his music program: Electrify your Strings. He is a lecturer at the annual " Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camps " and was elected to the Board of Directors of " American String Teachers Association " in 2008. In January 2008, his book " Electrify your Strings " was released. From 2010 on, he keeps up with various high-profile world-class rock musician one-week workshop on " Mark Wood Rock Orchestra Camp " followed by the final concert of all students.

Private life

He is married to singer Laura Kaye, and they have one child together. The son's name is Elijah Wood, was born in 1996 and with passion drummer.
