Marmara is a town and a district of the Turkish province of Balıkesir. The city is located about 110 kilometers north of the provincial capital of Balıkesir.

The county comprises the islands of Marmara Adası, Türkeli Adası (also Avşa Adası ) Ekinlik Adası (also Kaşık Adası ) and Hayırsız Adası. They are in the north of the province, northwest of the Kapıdağı Yarımadası Peninsula, corresponding to the district Erdek, in the Sea of ​​Marmara.

In the north of the island are the place Saraylar the quarries, where the already famous in antiquity Prokonnesische white marble is mined out, inter alia, the Pergamon Altar is created. The name comes from the Greek word Proconnesos for the island. In Saraylar an open-air marble museum can be visited.
