Martha Scott

Martha Ellen Scott ( born September 22, 1912 in Jamesport, Missouri; † 28 May 2003 in Van Nuys, California ) was an American actress.

Martha Scott was interested in already in high school for acting and later studied acting at the University of Michigan in Detroit. Your professional stage debut in 1933/1934 in Shakespeare productions for the World Exhibition in Chicago. Then she went to New York City to play theater on Broadway. During a performance of the play Our Town by Thornton Wilder, in which she played the female lead role of Emily Webb, she was discovered for the film.

In Hollywood, she played the same role in 1940 in the film adaptation of the play by Sam Wood and received an Oscar nomination. It remained the only one during their career. In the multi- Oscar winning film Ben Hur, she played Miriam, the mother of the title character, who was played by Charlton Heston. Martha Scott had played as early as 1956 in " The 10 Commandments " the mother of Moses, also portrayed by Charlton Heston. Later in her career she worked for both the film as well as in the theater. In 1968, she joined the theater production company Plumstead Theatre Company by Henry Fonda and Robert Ryan.

Martha Scott was married from 1946 until his death in 1998 with the jazz pianist and composer Mel Powell. In 2003 she was buried in her hometown of Jamesport at her husband's side.
