Mary Stewart (athlete)

Mary Stewart (married Cotton, born February 25, 1956 in Birmingham) is a former British middle and long distance runner.

In 1974 she was for Scotland starting at the British Commonwealth Games in Christchurch 1500m Fourth, at the Indoor Athletics Championships in Gothenburg fifth over the same distance and also starting for Scotland, at the World Cross Country Championships in Monza eighth. In 1975, she was at the European Indoor Championships in Katowice Sixth 1500m and came at the Cross Country World Cup in Rabat again to eighth place.

At the Olympic Games in Montreal in 1976, it reached more than 1500 m the semi-finals, and at the European Indoor Championships 1977 in San Sebastián, she won the 1500m.

In 1978, she finished at the Cross Country World Championships in Glasgow on the 18th place and won with the English team bronze. At the Commonwealth Games in Edmonton, she won starting for England than 1500 m, at the European Athletics Championships in Prague, she retired about the same distance from the inlet port.

1975 and 1979 it was AAA champion in the 1500 m. In the hall she took three times the AAA title over 1500 m (1975, 1977, 1979 ) and twice higher than 3000 m (1976, 1977).

Her older brothers Peter Stewart and Ian Stewart have been a successful long distance runner.
