Massimo D'Alema

Massimo D' Alema ( born April 20, 1949 in Rome ) is an Italian politician (PD). He was from October 1998 to April 2000 Prime Minister of Italy. From 17 May 2006 to 8 May 2008, he was Italian Foreign Minister in the second government of Romano Prodi.

Life

D' Alema was a member of the Italian Communist Party ( Partito Comunista Italiano, PCI ) In 1991 the founders of the company resulting from the PCI Democratic Party of the Left ( Democratic Party of the Sinistra, PDS). In 1994, he broke Achille Occhetto from the chairmanship of the PDS. From 1996 to 2001, the PDS, which was renamed after a union with other socialist groups, in " Democratic Left " ( Democrats of the Sinistra, DS) 1998, participated as part of the left electoral alliance Ulivo to the Italian Government. D' Alema was the government from 1998 to 2000 before as prime minister.

In the 2004 European elections, D' Alema was elected to the European Parliament, and until 27 April 2006 for the DS also a member of the Group of the Party of European Socialists (PES ). In 2006 he gave up the mandate in the European Parliament to be Italian foreign minister in the Cabinet Prodi II. This office he had to give up after the election defeat of 2008 Ulivo again

After the 2009 European elections D'Alema was next to Adrian Severin as a promising candidate for the office of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
