Matagalpa is the capital of the department of Matagalpa, with 485,500 inhabitants, is the second largest administrative region in Nicaragua. The municipality of Matagalpa has about 200,000 inhabitants. Of these, about 120,000 live in the city and about 80,000 in the surrounding areas. Matagalpa is located at an altitude of 681 meters above the sea level.

Geography

The city is located 132 km north of Nicaragua's capital, Managua. The municipal area is 64 065 square kilometers and is bordered on the north by the municipality of Jinotega, on the east by the municipios del Tuma (La Dalia, San Ramon and Muy Muy ), to the south by the municipality of Esquipulas and San Dionisio and to the west by the municipality of Sebaco.

History

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, there were in the field already Amerindian settlements, one of which is called Matagalpa or Pueblo Grande was. The other two were called Solingalpa and Molagüina. The city of Matagalpa rights received on 14 February 1862.

On 19 December 1924, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Matagalpa was built.

Economy

Matagalpa makes a significant contribution to the gross domestic product of Nicaragua. Economically stands Matagalpa to Managua in second place. The relative wealth of the city is because Matagalpa is the center of coffee production in Nicaragua. From this source comes a large part of the revenue. In addition, beans, corn and vegetables are grown. More recently, flowers are grown for export increased.
