Matthew Mbu

Matthew Tavo Mbu ( born November 20, 1929 in Okundi, Cross River, † February 6, 2012 in London, United Kingdom) was a Nigerian politician and diplomat.

Life

Matthew Mbu attended from 1937 to 1940 the Okundi Primary School, then 1941-1943 the Kakwagon Seminary School. From 1955, he studied law in the Middle Temple and University College London and earned a Master of Laws in 1959.

His political career began in Nigeria Mbu before the country's independence as a member of parliament from 1952 to 1955, from 1954 he was also Nigerian Federal Minister of Labour. From 1955 to 1959, he served his country as High Commissioner in London ( UK). In the year of independence in 1960 Mbu returned to the country's politics and was up again in 1966 Member of Parliament. During this time he was appointed as Minister of Defense and Navy. In 1966 he was ambassador in Washington, D.C. (USA). In 1967 he was appointed Chairman of the Eastern Nigeria Public Service Commission. From 1979 to 1981 Mbu was the first vice- chairman ( vice - chairman ) of the Nigeria People's Party, before he joined the National Party of Nigeria turning between 1981 and 1983. In 1993 he was Nigerian Foreign Minister for a short term. At times, he was also Vice -Chancellor (Pro - Chancellor ) of the Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile - Ife.

He was married and the father of six children.
