Maurice Thiriet

Maurice Charles Thiriet ( born April 2, 1906 in Meulan, † September 28, 1972 in Puys, community Bracquemont, Seine- Maritime) was a French composer.

Life

Maurice Thiriet, who received his first piano lessons from his mother, began to compose at the age of 13 years. Funded by Maurice Ravel, he began in 1923 to study with Charles Silver at the Conservatoire de Paris. From 1925 to 1930 he studied harmony and counterpoint here with Charles Koechlin and composition, orchestration and musical aesthetics at Alexis Roland -Manuel. In the early 1930s he studied with Maurice Jaubert the technique of composing film music.

From 1933 to 1972, he created the music for more than 80 films, including Fanfan, the hussar (1952) and Thérèse Étienne ( 1957). With Children of Paradise, whose music he had written with Joseph Kosma, he gained international recognition in 1945.

In addition Thiriet wrote orchestral works, songs, operas Le Bourgeois de falaise (1953 ) and 16 ballets. Of his orchestral works, especially the three-movement Concerto for Flute and String Orchestra ( 1959) obtained greater reception. Stylistically Thiriets music is largely associated with the neoclassicism. He also processed elements of jazz.
