Geology

The Mercury and the south adjacent Small Staufenberg ( 623.4 m) mountains are witnesses of several layers of sedimentary rocks built up. Ascending from the urban area of Baden- Baden is first place 251-299 million year old deposits and conglomerates of the Rotliegend. Since it is in the enclosed therein larger stones around volcanic rocks (quartz porphyry ), the rocks were given the technical term porphyry conglomerate. Above the Rotliegend find red sandstone, initially Lower and Middle Buntsandstein at higher altitudes sandstone. These rocks are 244-251 million years old.

In the many millions of years ago to 60 million years, many other rock layers have been deposited yet. For 60 million years ago, the Black Forest raises or lowers the grave breach of the Rhine valley. Since then complement the surroundings of via the Middle Buntsandstein strata were removed by erosion again. The erosion formed the valleys around Mercury and the mountain itself

Thanks to the emergence of the Black Forest with its many faults along the edge formed grave. Several columns are available in and around Baden -Baden. One of these columns is from Baden -Baden from Murg valley between Mercury and Battert. She is responsible for the natural hot springs of Baden -Baden. It is underground so deep and wide that large bodies of water can circulate in it and so transport the heat from the Earth's interior to the surface.

To the east of the Little Staufenbergs there are 318-299 million year old rocks of the Upper Carboniferous. In this layer are often located coal seams. In Müllenbachschleife a prospecting was carried out on uranium. The reliably known uranium deposits amounted to 3,000 tons, the uranium content is only 0.2 %, so that a reduction is not economical.

Next southeast of waste stream eventually you come across the foothills of the basement of solid granite.
