Merlo Partido

Merlo is a Partido in Buenos Aires Province in eastern Argentina, part of the Province of Buenos Aires. The Partido belongs to the Zona Oeste. Capital is the city of Merlo.

History

The today's Partido region was settled shortly after the second and permanent founding of Buenos Aires. In 1730, Francisco de Merlo founded near his Estancia a parish. In the same year Merlo founded the town of Villa de San Antonio del Camino, which was later renamed in his honor in Merlo. For many years Merlo lagged behind the development of the nearby town of Morón. 1865, the region was officially declared the Partido. The city of Merlo was formerly a railroad hub and a commercial center for the agricultural surroundings. About half of the Partido is now in Greater Buenos Aires, although the population density is lower than in other partidos.

Population and geography

The Partido today has 469 985 inhabitants in an area of 170 km ². This corresponds to a population density of 2764.6 inhabitants / km ².

The Partido borders Morón and Ituzaingó ( in the northeast ), La Matanza ( in the southeast ), Marcos Paz ( in the southwest ), Moreno ( in the northwest) and to the river Río de la Reconquista ( in the northwest). Other important towns of the Partido addition to the city Merlo San Antonio de Padua, Parque San Martín, Libertad, Pontevedra and Mariano Acosta. Other smaller towns are Merlo Norte, Villa Reconquista, Villa Pompeya Barrio Samoré.

Policy

The Partido is managed by a kind of district administration, in the executive ( the mayor or in Spanish Intendente ) and the legislature ( the City Council or in Spanish Consejo Deliberante ) is divided.

The mayor is elected for a term of four years. Incumbent since 1991, Raúl Alfredo Othacehe, a lawyer and a Peronist. The City Council consists of 24 members, the majority often has the Peronist party. The mayor and councilors can be reelected indefinitely.
