Mertert

Mertert ( Luxembourgish Mäertert ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, in the canton Grevenmacher.

Composition of the community

The municipality was established on October 22, 1796 by a merger of two towns Mertert water and Cheap.

It belongs to the following local organizations: SIAEG, SICEC, Sidere, SIDEST, SIGI, SIGRE, SITEG, SYVICOL.

Miscellaneous

In the low water Sauer flows into the Moselle. At the site of the confluence, the lowest point of the country, the Moselle leaves the country.

In Mertert also opens the Syr into the Moselle.

The parish church was rebuilt in 1885-1886.

In the local elections in autumn 2011, the LSAP won with 48.41 percent of the vote five seats, the CSV with 32.78 percent four and the DP with 18.81 percent, two seats.

Economy and Transport

In Mertert is since completion of the Moselle canalization in 1964 with the Port de Mertert the only cargo port of the Grand Duchy.

Mertert is strongly influenced by the cross-border trade with Germany. This is especially true for the tank tourism. Approximately a dozen gas stations lined up on the road between water cheap and Mertert, the border rest stop on the highway was expanded into a gas station.
