Michael Russell (bishop of Waterford and Lismore)

Michael Russell ( born December 10, 1920 in Loughmore, County Tipperary, Ireland; † January 12, 2009 in Waterford, County Waterford, Ireland) was Roman Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Waterford and Lismore.

Life

Michael Russell received his priestly formation in Maynooth and received on 17 June 1945, the ordination. In 1948 he received his doctorate in canon law and was a professor of moral theology at St. Patrick 's College, Thurles. Until 1965, he was also Vice- President of St Patrick 's College.

1965 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. He received his episcopal consecration on 19 December 1965, the Archbishop of Armagh, Cardinal William Conway; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giuseppe Maria Sensi, Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland and later cardinal, and Thomas Morris, Archbishop of Cashel and Emly. On 27 May 1993 his age-related resignation was accepted.
