Michel van der Aa

Michel van der Aa ( born March 10, 1970 in Oss, Netherlands) is a Dutch composer of new music, film and theater director. His works include chamber music, orchestral works, ballet music, operas and short films.

Life

After training as a sound engineer at the Hague Conservatory van der Aa studied composition with Diderik Wagenaar, Gilius van Bergeijk and Louis Andriessen. In 2002, he completed his training by studying at the New York Film Academy. 2007 was followed by a course in theater production.

Van der Aa 1993 founded a production company for productions of contemporary music. First compositions van der Aa was first performed in 1995. Followed in 1996 with Staring at the Space a first commissioned work for the symphony orchestra Norrköping. In 1997 and 1998 he was composer in residence at the The Hague Percussion Group. Van der Aa was invited in 2001 and 2004 at the Donaueschingen Music Days. 2006 was his work emphasis of the program at the Holland Festival; in this framework, the opera was premiered Afterlife.
