Mihai Covaliu

Mihai Claudiu Covaliu ( born November 5, 1977 in Braşov, Braşov county ) is a former Romanian fencer and current coach.

Covalius preferred weapon was the saber. At the Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996, he finished in 25th place in the individual competition and finished seventh with the Romanian team saber. At the 2000 Olympics in Sydney he erfocht the gold medal in singles and was fourth with the team. Four years later Covaliu 2004 was seventh at the Olympics, at the 2008 Olympics he won the bronze medal.

At the 2002 European Championships in Moscow Covaliu won bronze in singles. In the 2002 World Cup in Lisbon, he was third in 2003 he won second place. Five years after his Olympic victory won Covaliu at the 2005 World Championships in Leipzig, his second major title. At the European Championships in 2007 in Ghent and at the 2008 European Championship in Kiev he erfocht bronze in singles.

In the fall of 2008, he ended his active career and has been coach of the Romanian national team saber. Covaliu is since July 2001 married to the former epee fencer Irina Draghici and has one son (* 2005) and a daughter (* 2008).

Awards

In August 2008, received Mihai Covaliu of President Traian Basescu the Order of Merit " Meritul sporty " III. Class with two stripes.
