Endre Kabos

Endre Kabos [ ɛndrɛ kɒboʃ ] ( born November 5, 1906 in Oradea, † November 4, 1944 in Budapest) was a Hungarian saber fencer.

Kabos participated in Los Angeles and in Berlin in 1936 at the Summer Olympics in 1932. In both games he was with the Hungarian team Olympic champion in the team competition, in the individual competitions he won the bronze in 1932 and 1936, the gold medal. In addition, he was each individual and team world champion in saber fencing in the years 1933, 1934 and 1936. At the European Championships, he was the 1933 and 1934 single and 1931, 1933, 1934 and 1935 win the team title.

Due to his Jewish origins, he was deported during World War II in a labor camp, escaped and joined the Hungarian resistance to. He died when the Margaret Bridge in Budapest was blown up accidentally on November 4, 1944.

In 1986, he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in Netanya. At the Berlin Olympic Stadium, there is a memorial plaque for Endre Kabos. Motives of his life, " A Touch of Sunshine " (1999) by director Istvan Szabo were taken up in the film.
