Missa Cellensis in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae

The Missa in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae Cellensis (German: , Mariazell Mass in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary '; also Wide Mariazell Fair) in C major ( XXII: 5) is a measurement of composition by Joseph Haydn. In older revisions it also carries the title Missa Sanctae Caeciliae or German " Cäcilienmesse ", but apparently is a subsequent appreciation of foreign hand. A 1970 aufgefundenes in Romania fragment of the autograph score of Haydn called the full title of the work as well as the 1782 resulting Missa Cellensis ( Mariazell Mass) ( XXII: 8) assigns to the Marian shrine of Mariazell in Styria, hence the name Missa Cellensis the two works.

History

According to the latest musicological findings Haydn began the composition of the fair in 1766, this year Haydn was first Kapellmeister to Prince Esterhazy and was also responsible for church music. The composition was completed probably only in 1773. This fair is the largest measuring composition that he has ever written. Above all, the Gloria has an enormous length, it has 821 cycles and is divided into seven parts. This form corresponds to the cantata mass. Probably Haydn wanted to make with this show all his compositional skills to the test, because the fair is full of joints, fugal points and almost operatic solos. A performance of the fair lasts for about 65 min. This would go beyond the liturgical context, for this reason the first edition of the score in 1807 by Breitkopf & Hartel was moved in abbreviated form. Whether the nickname " St. Cecilia Mass" with a performance by the Vienna Composers Brotherhood of St. Cecilia Congregation ( in the times of the principal of the fair was suspected ) related the occasion of the Feast of Saint Cecilia in a November 22, is a documentary not assignable.
