Moldova national football team

The Moldovan national team is the selection of the Republic of Moldova. Since its independence in 1991, Moldova has never qualified for a World or European Championship finals. Moldova took part in the World Championships from 1958 to 1990 and the European Championships from 1960 to 1992 as part of the USSR and the CIS. In the Soviet national team but Moldavian players played no role. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union into several independent states Moldova first participated in the qualifiers for Euro 1996.

Moldova is in the FIFA world rankings with 255 points currently ranked 128 (as of February 2013).

World Cup Qualifiers 1998

The Moldovan national team has no points and two goals scored last group behind England, Italy, Poland and Georgia.

World Cup Qualifiers 2002

Moldova finished the World Cup Qualifiers 2002 with a win ( 2-0 against Azerbaijan) and three draws from ten games behind Sweden, Turkey, Slovakia and Macedonia and in Azerbaijan in 5th place.

2006 World Cup qualifiers

Moldova joined the 2006 World Cup qualifiers with a win (2-0 against Belarus ) and two draws from ten games behind Italy, Norway, Scotland, Slovenia and Belarus from last place.

World Cup Qualifiers 2010

Even with the qualification for World Cup 2010 ended Moldova the first round in last place in Group 2 behind Switzerland, Greece, Latvia, Israel and Luxembourg. After the departure of coach Dobrowolski resigned from his post.

World Cup Qualifiers 2014

In qualifying for the World Cup 2014, the Moldovan team met in the Europa Group H on England, Montenegro, Poland, San Marino and Ukraine. With three wins, two draws and five defeats Moldova came in last place in the group.

European Championship Qualification 1996

Moldova won its first two games (1-0 in Georgia, 3-2 against Wales), but then lost seven games in succession. In the end, the team finished with nine points in fourth place in their qualifying group behind the eventual winners Germany, the World Cup Fourth Bulgaria and Georgia, but ahead of Wales and Albania.

European Championship Qualification 2000

Moldova joined in Group 3 against defending champions Germany, Turkey, Finland and Northern Ireland. During qualification, the Moldovans could not win a game and landed on the bottom of the table.

European Championship Qualification 2004

Moldova ranked in Group 3 4th Place behind the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, Austria and Belarus before and could not qualify.

European Championship Qualification 2008

Moldova played in Group C against holders Greece, Turkey, Norway, Bosnia - Herzegovina, Hungary and Malta. The team failed to qualify for the finals again.

European Championship Qualification 2012

In qualifying Group E Moldova played against the Netherlands, Hungary, Sweden, Finland and San Marino. The team failed to qualify for the finals as fifth-placed again. 19 December 2011, then it was announced that the leaked contract was not renewed with coach Gavril Balint.

European Championship Qualification 2016

In qualifying for the Euro 2016 Moldova meets Russia, Sweden, Austria and Montenegro, and for the first time in Liechtenstein.

Trivia

The second book by British writer Tony Hawks, match point in Moldova, is about the encounter between the author and those eleven Moldovan national team players who were in the 0-4 defeat in England in 1999 kick-off in the square. As a result of a bet Hawks had all footballers defeat in tennis, which he ultimately succeeded. The following players beat Hawks: Denis Romanenco, Oleg Fistican, Marin Spynu, Ion Testimitanu, Vitalie Culibaba, Serghei Stroenco, Radu Rebeja, Alexandru Curtianu, Oleg Şişchin, Iurie Miterev and Serghei Rogaciov.
