Montauriol, Pyrénées-Orientales

Montauriol (in Catalan Montoriol ) is a commune with 213 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Pyrénées- Orientales of the Languedoc -Roussillon region. It belongs to the district Ceret and the canton of Ceret.

Geography

The village Montauriol itself is not a homogeneous entity, but rather a collection of farmhouses ( mas ) at the eastern edge of the Pyrenees, still influenced by the Catalan culture. The municipality has an area of ​​1,110 acres and currently has about 200 inhabitants. Montauriol between the Spanish border and about 20 km west of Perpignan, seat of the prefecture and is one of the 14 municipalities of the canton of Ceret. History

Montauriol is very common as a place name in Catalonia and Languedoc, but its origin comes from Latin and means profane "Golden Mountain" (from the Latin mons aureolus ).

The history of the village began with the conquest of the region by the Carolingian dynasty around 800 AD. Viticulture and economy

The formerly very wooded stock of holm oaks, cork oaks and chestnut is increasingly threatened by deforestation in favor of the EC subsidized viticulture.
