Montpeyroux, Hérault

Montpeyroux ( Occitan Mont Peirós meaning " Stony Mountain" ) is a commune with 1251 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Hérault in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. Its inhabitants are called " Montpeyroussiens " ". Montpeyroux located 38 kilometers north- west of Montpellier.

Geography

The village lies on the boundary of two landscapes: the foothills of the Causse limestone area and the alluvium of the Hérault. Above the village rises the ruin of " Le Castellas " (250 m ) and the mountain peaks Baudille (847 m). It is crossroads of different north-south and east-west connections, such as centuries-old pilgrimage routes. The Abbey of Saint Aniane located in the vicinity. Since the Middle Ages Montpeyroux determined by its strategic location and geological economic prosperity. In the surrounding hills it grows, the Syrah dominates the vineyards.
