Montserrat Caballé

Maria de Montserrat Viviana Concepción Caballé i Folch [ munsərat kəβəʎe ] ( born April 12, 1933, Barcelona) is a Spanish opera singer in the vocal range soprano. She is considered one of the most important opera singers of the 20th century.

Life

Caballé studied singing in Barcelona and Milan and debuted in Basel in 1956 as Mimi in Puccini's La Bohème. In addition, she sang at the theater in Saarbrücken. From 1959 to 1962 she was engaged at the theater of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. In 1965 she jumped for Marilyn Horne in a concert performance of Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia at Carnegie Hall, and wowed the audience. In the same year she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as Marguerite in Gounod's Faust, which she became known internationally. Caballé is a frequent guest at festivals (including Glyndebourne ), since 1971, she also appeared regularly at the Hamburg State Opera. They also frequently occurs as a concert singer.

1998 Caballé was awarded a Bambi. In 2007 she was awarded the Echo Klassik Music Prize for her life's work.
