Moritz August Seubert

Moritz August Seubert ( born June 2, 1818 in Karlsruhe, † April 8, 1878 ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Seub. ".

Life

The son of a Medizinalrats first attended the School in Karlsruhe and had at that time been in contact with the botanist Alexander Braun, who interested him in this subject. He studied from 1836 at the University of Heidelberg Medical and Natural Sciences in 1837 in Bonn. His teachers in Bonn, Georg August Goldfuß, Ludolph Christian Treviranus and Johann Jacob Noeggerath. After his PhD. in Bonn he joined the University of Berlin, where he habilitated. From 1843 he taught in Bonn as Privatdozent.

In 1846 he was appointed professor of botany and zoology at the Polytechnic of Karlsruhe as a successor of Alexander Brown. At the same time he succeeded Brown as head of the Grand Ducal Naturalienkabinett and the Botanical Gardens Karlsruhe. He also worked for several years librarian at the Grand Ducal Court and State Library.

In addition to teaching and administrative activities Seubert has written numerous writings. Thus, published in 1844 the "Flora azorica " in which he aufarbeitete the herbaria of Christian Ferdinand Friedrich Hochstetter and his son Karl Hofstetter.
