Geology

→ See also: Geology of the Odenwald

The detectable geological history Moerlen Bach begins with the formation of Bergsträßer Odenwald, which extends as a western part of the Crystalline Odenwald from Darmstadt to Heidelberg. In a further narrowing Morlenbach lies in the area of the so-called → Weschnitzplutons ( a granodiorite ). It limits ( in the eastern part of the core community and in the districts of ponds and upper Mumbach ) of → Trommgranit as well ( esp. to Vöckelsbach ) a mixing zone of metamorphic rock floes on, penetrated and surrounded by granitoids. These formations were caused by large movements of the earth in two different geological eras.

  • The granodiorites and Biotitgranite have been developed in the Palaeozoic ( Paleozoic ) or formed from old stock. The size and distribution of the continents at that time was quite different than today: "Central Europe" was south of the equator in an ocean area and consisted of small continents. Back then drifted through the continental drift a southern continent to a Northern Europe to. This collided with the intervening " Central European " dwarf -continent and in the Devonian and Carboniferous Period ( 380-320 million years ago ) got up on and between them the Variscan Mountains to the counts of the Odenwald. Due to the co- thrusts ( subduction ) were once deep-pocketed the ancient rocks in the earth's crust and melted in the upper mantle at about 15 km depth, slow to Second - pushed back into the earth's crust, where it gradually over the course of 60 million years - along with magma rocks cooled down and crystallized. Today in Bergsträßer Odenwald put the granites and diorites as powerful intrusive body between the old stocks that have been formed metamorphic schists and gneisses to. The Weschnitzpluton as the largest single granodiorite association of Bergsträßer Odenwald originated in Lower Carboniferous million years ago, about 333-329. The nachdringende before about 320 million years Trommgranit welded the Bergsträßer with the eastern → Böllsteiner - gneiss -Odenwald 50 million years older. In the area of pond - Vöckelsbach by a mixing zone with granitic rocks and converted legacy, such as biotite - plagioclase gneiss clods developed - formerly known as amphibolite. These tectonic processes tore repeatedly in the rock masses columns into which melts invaded and there crystallized to dykes, such as the Kersantit -course on the Juhöhe. Older Granodioritbestände were younger aplitartige Granite durchtrümmert ( Bonsweiher - Upper Dear Bach).
  • Many millions of years later - the Variscan mountains were eroded by weathering already up to his torso - it came in Central Europe back to strong movements in the earth's crust: In conjunction with a rift zone from the Mediterranean to the North Sea broke - in the Tertiary before about 45 million years ago - the upper Rhine Graben one. As a result, many criss-crossing fractures disassembled the area now in the Odenwald mountain blocks and trenches. In Weschnitztal led shear movements of the opposing side shifting masses of rock - in the so-called Mylonitzonen - to a destruction of the granite rocks - as in the eastern part Moerlen Bach towards low - Mumbach. Some columns in Moerlen Bacher room filled with quartz and Schwerspatlösungen, for example, on the panoramic road towards low - Mumbach or at Steinböhl in small -Breitenbach. By that weathering and erosion conducive, warm moist Tertiary climate and fluvial removal of the talus, the Weschnitz cut deeply into the terrain, as well sawed the streams of the valleys in Morlenbach the mountain ranges whose upper parts is divided by cracks into blocks, which are then by Chemical weathering spherical rock castles and seas formed ( Wollsackverwitterung ), eg on the Juhöhe.
  • In the subsequent ice age in the Odenwald, there was a permafrost environment. That is, the ground was permanently frozen deep. When heated ( end of the Ice Age ), the upper layer thawed, freed from rubble rocks slip on the still frozen ground hangabwärt. Thus was formed from the hull of the Variscan mountain belt today's typical low mountain landscape of long-range - as a trans- montane basins acting - Weschnitztals and its mountain chains.

Witnesses of geological history are:

  • Historical: Schwerspatabbau (barytes ) Low - Mumbach ( 1900)
  • Amphibolitsteinbruch (see above: biotite - plagioclase gneiss plaice ) at Mack 's home in direction Vöckelsbach
  • Former granodiorite quarries eg Bonsweiher towards Juhöhe
  • Caused by Wollsackverwitterung and erosion of weathering debris - large accumulations Granodioritblöcke on the Juhöhe
  • Quartz - barite - blocks at Steinböhl in small -Breitenbach

Neighboring communities

Morlenbach borders in the north on the community Rimbach, on the east by the municipalities of Forest -Michel Bach and Abtsteinach, to the south by the municipality of Birkenau, in the west on the town Hemsbach and the community Laudenbach (both Rhein- Neckar-Kreis in Baden- Württemberg ) and in the northwest to the town of Heppenheim.

Community structure

Morlenbach initially consists of the main town of the same name, in whose bounds the hamlets of small -Breitenbach, wholesale Breitenbach, bed Bach and low - Mumbach are. In addition to the community include the in the northwest districts Upper Dear Bach and Bonsweiher with the settlement Juhöhe, the South East districts pond, Vöckelsbach, top Mumbach with the hamlet Geisenbach, and finally the very south of the district of Rohrbach.

Climate

Due to its location close to the mountain road prevails in Morlenbach a mild climate that is often visible at a very early for Germany almond tree blossom.

History

795 AD Morlenbach was first mentioned. In the 13th century Morlenbach gained importance as it was located strategically between the Palatinate and Electoral Mainz.

Incorporations

In the course of municipal reform in Hesse were the previously independent municipalities upper Dear Bach, Upper Mumbach, Vöckelsbach ( December 31, 1970), pond ( 1 July 1971) and Bonsweiher incorporated ( at 31 December 1971 ) to Mörlenbach. 1995 celebrated Morlenbach the 1200 years of existence. see also Postal Morlenbach

Culture and sights

Structures

Around the market square with the village fountain you will find the old and the new city hall, the Catholic church and a restored remnant of the ramparts of the 13th century.

Until 1930/31 used as a school and teacher's residence, the building was converted to the administrative office of the Mayor, who in 1978 moved to the newly built city hall. Interior and exterior renovation, it is now inter alia for civil ceremonies used.

Originating from the 12th and 13th century Catholic parish church of St. Bartholomew houses next to other works of art three altars, including one by Michel Erhart 1494 and a 350 year old organ from the chapel of Frederick building at Heidelberg Castle.

In Morlenbach there are several crosses of red sandstone, like the front of the southern transept of the Catholic Church from 1822.

In 1994, this town house offers space for up to 900 people and is used for a wide range of events.

Regular events

Economy and infrastructure

Education

  • 6 kindergartens
  • Primary school pond
  • Primary and secondary school ( school courtyard )
  • School learning support ( Weschnitztalschule )

Traffic

Due to its central location in Weschnitztal Morlenbach is a transport hub. By Morlenbach performs the national highway 38, which is the main artery in the Rhine- Neckar. In the center, the L 3120 discharges from the Überwald coming into the B 38 and continues to Heppenheim. The inaugurated in 1999 Saukopf tunnel connects Morlenbach directly to the motorway network.

The bypass B 38a is in planning stage and will contribute to a reduction of intra- local traffic conditions. The planning was delayed by discrepancies between proponents of different implementation options, however. Here, over the favored by environmental groups tunneling Moerlen Bach (variant W4) and favored by the municipality bypass ( O2 variant ) is discussed.

Morlenbach is in the range of the transport association Rhein- Neckar. The Morlenbach station is located on the Weschnitztalbahn Weinheim -Fürth (Odenwald ). Stop there every hour, weekdays at peak times every half hour regional trains of DB Regio AG. From the Weschnitztalbahn branched at the station, the disused railway from over forest after forest -Michel Bach.
