Mosset

Mosset is a commune of the Pyrénées -Orientales in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. Administratively, it is assigned to the Canton Prades Prades and the district.

The village is since 2003 as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ) classified.

Geography

The southern French mountain village with 293 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) is located on over 700 feet in Conflent and in the valley of Castellane, a tributary of the Tet. The municipality is located in the northeast of the Regional Natural Park Pyrenees Catalanes about 55 kilometers west of the city of Perpignan. A 12 km long serpentine leads up to the village of Prades, the straight line calculated by a mere 5 kilometers southwest of the town is located.

The community is really huge with nearly 72 square kilometers, for the area includes, among others also 13 kilometers away, and 1506 meter high summit of the Col de Jau, a place that is perfectly secluded and with which to Mosset " boasts " to have the smallest ski area in the world.

History

Mosset was fortified in the Middle Ages. In the early and high Middle Ages, the castle and the associated fiefs belonged to the Counts of Cerdanya. The castle and the church dominate the townscape today.

Architecture

The chapel Chapelle Notre- Dame de Corbiac was originally built in Romanesque style. The floor plan of the sacred building is simple: the strikingly elongated nave with gabled roof is fitted with a flat conical roof half round, slightly lower apse. The apse is decorated with frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries. The mullioned small bell gable has primitive Romanesque capitals. The nave has a barrel vault broken. The gallery is from the end of the 16th century. Many parts of the original interior finishes are now housed in the church of Saint -Julien, such as a wooden statue of Mary from the founding days of the chapel. The religious building is a French cultural monument since 2000.

History

The chapel and the monastery were founded in 1062 by Chevalier de Beranger Corbiac. Completed was the construction in the 13th century. First mentioned the chapel under the name Ecclesia Sanctae Mariae Corbiaco is in a deed of 1334. 1549, Baron de Mosset Don Gérard de Cruilles spot the mausoleum Mausolée of Cruilles de Santa Pau build, but left it in 1575 to the Order of the Trinity. Pierre d' Oriola founded a new monastery and became his first Prior of the Order, although only a few monks dressed, the abbey was soon expanded. 1610 left the Trinitarians the place and the Augustinians took over the Priory. During the 18th century the importance of place until it decreased continuously as the French Revolution, all was forgotten and the chapel fell apart slowly.

Today it is owned by an English couple, which is committed to the restoration. The recently restored Renaissance wall paintings from the 16th century are unique in the Roussillon.

  • The remains of the medieval castle from the 11th-century today - brutally divided - several private residences.

  • The watchtower Tour de Mascarda from the year 1242 with a square base is half way to the Col de Jau and is evidence of the strategic importance of this pass in the Middle Ages.
  • Tour des parfums is called a cylinder-shaped building, which houses a museum. Visitors and visitors can here in a fun and interactive way to test and sharpen their sense of smell of perfumes, of odors, as they occur in the practice of various crafts or to those which nature holds ready.

Events

The Opera Mosset is an open-air performance, which takes place in late July and early August. The event is a tradition and each year is listed another popular opera or operetta. For 2012, the " La Belle Hélène " by Jacques Offenbach is programmed, directed and conducted by Albert Heijdens.
