Lagrasse

Lagrasse is a commune of the Aude in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. Administratively, it is assigned to the Canton of Lagrasse and the district of Carcassonne.

The village is classified as one of the plus beaux villages de France ( most beautiful villages in France ).

Geography

The southern French village with 575 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) located in the Corbières mountains and is located about 35 kilometers west of Narbonne and 30 kilometers southeast of Carcassonne, in a valley floor in the Orbieu. The climate is Mediterranean.

History

The place name derives from the Occitan grassa ( " fertile " ) from.

The early history of the village is closely linked to that of the Abbey of Sainte -Marie de Lagrasse. First documented the monastery is in a charter of Charlemagne, which dates from the year 778. The first abbot was Nebridius ( 778-813 ). The monastery had its heyday in the early and high Middle Ages. In the High Middle Ages, the town was built after the plans of fortified towns.

During the French Revolution the monastery was confiscated by the state in 1792, divided into two sections of different sizes and sold as national property. This separation exists in principle today. The smaller portion is used by the General Council of the Aude and the larger of the Canons Regular are drawn for several years sisters after this part of the building in the 19th century from had served as a military hospital.
