Montauriol (Aude)
Montauriol is a commune with 78 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Aude department in the Languedoc- Roussillon region. It belongs to the district of Carcassonne and the canton of Salles- sur -l'Hers.
Montauriol is quite a widespread place name in Spanish Catalonia and the French Languedoc. The place name is derived from the Latin " mons aureolus ", meaning very profane " golden mountain".
Geography
The 78 -strong community Montauriol was in the past, the now-defunct French province Lauragais, named after the castle LAURAC. Effective advertising is called up recently also Cathar country. Through the municipal area of Montauriol flows of Hers - Mort, a 87 km long tributary of the Garonne.
Featured locations
From the former station building a disused narrow gauge railway, a path leads to the village square, where the school and the city council. Before and after the town hall can be found on the lintel of two houses here not expecting sculptures of a resident here gewesenen mason Berquière. Only from the northwest opening, the castle grounds is still protected by trenches. Only two weathered, almost square towers flank the corners of the former castle grounds to the east and south. Now, as then, it is privately owned.
The next-door originally Roman church has long since disappeared. 1311 documents prove the rule of the Abbey of Sainte -Marie de Lagrasse about this church building. Later, a modest new church was built, whose portal the year 1812 bears. In spite of the few residents here a triangular bell tower with three modern bells was built.
Above the old castle there are still remnants of a former windmill.

Mautauriol can be reached via the D 624, with the eastern town of Castelnaudary connects the west, Salles -sur -l'Hers (about six kilometers ) (approx. 13 km ).
