Mount Evans

Mount Evans is the highest and most famous mountain in the Front Range, a mountain range of the Rocky Mountains, in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. It counts with 4,350 meters ( 14,264 feet) altitude to the 54 so-called Fourteeners in Colorado, so the peaks over 14,000 feet in elevation. Of these it is the city of Denver closest, the distance is about 70 km. It towers above the Pikes Peak near Colorado Springs was still about 50 meters.

Originally, the mountain was named Mount Rosa or Mount Rosalie ( after the wife of the landscape painter Albert Bierstadt, the first ascent is attributed ). 1895 the mountain was named in honor of the second governor of the Colorado Territories, John Evans, renamed.

In addition to the Pikes Peak and Mount Bierstadt Mount Evans dominates the image of the Front Range, as you approach from the east over the Great Plains to the Rocky Mountains.

Between Mount Evans and Pikes Peak there was always a certain amount of competition for the attention of tourists. Once a toll road had been built on the Pikes Peak, attended Denver's then mayor in the early 1970s that even the summit of Mount Evans was to reach by car soon. The Mount Evans Scenic Byway is now considered the highest paved road in North America.

Near the summit, the Meyer- Womble Observatory of the University of Denver is located.
