Mountbatten -Windsor is the personal surname ( family name) of the descendants of Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of her husband, Prince Philip Mountbatten. It is the English name variant of the original German houses Battenberg ( Mountbatten ) - a morganatic branch line of the House of Hesse - and Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (Windsor ).
The name of the British royal family is since the name change in 1917, Windsor (formerly Saxe -Coburg and Gotha ). In February 1960 Elizabeth II announced that Mountbatten -Windsor is the surname of their descendants from his marriage to Prince Philip. It should also be noted that Prince Philip, although the surname Mountbatten leads and his mother was a Battenberg, but he 's paternal Greek branch of the House of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- Glücksburg comes.
