Mozambique Ports and Railways

Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (CFM ) is the national railway company of Mozambique. It is divided into the three companies CFM -South, Central and CFM CFM - North. Since 2004 parts of this network have been privatized. All three can be the most important ports in Mozambique assign: Maputo, Beira and Nacala. The distances of the individual companies are only connected by routes to neighboring countries together: CFM -south across the Limpopo line to Harare and from there via the Beira Corridor to CFM Central, from there via the Malawi - line after Nkaya in Malawi and there over Nayuchi and Cuamba to Nacala to CFM - North. In particular, the trade with the Republic of South Africa is handled on these transport routes, often with locomotives and cars of the Transnet Freight Rail. All routes are built in Cape gauge and - with the exception of the distance between Maputo and South Africa - single track.

CFM -South

The CFM - South has a route network of 1,070 kilometers, consists of three lines: Maputo Ressano Garcia on the border with the Republic of South Africa; Maputo - Goba on the border with Swaziland, Maputo Malvernia on the border with Zimbabwe ( Limpopo line) and following the National Railways of Zimbabwe. The rails are in very good condition, have cape gauge and carry an axle load of 20 tons. 1984 were 97 and 85 diesel locomotives available as well as 11 railcars. In addition, CFM -South has 3,299 freight and 91 passenger wagons. Since Maputo is a very important export port for South Africa, the furnishing of CFM -South is similar.

CFM Central

The CFM - Central has a route network of 994 kilometers, consists of three routes: Beira- Mutare in Zimbabwe ( Beira Corridor ); Beira- Makhanga Border Station in Malawi (Malawi - line); in Dona Ana at the Malawi - line branches off another line from Moatize after. This so-called Sena line to Moatize was expanded in 2006 for 165 million U.S. dollars. The plan is a continuation of the line from Moatize to the northeast over and Mwanza to Blantyre (Malawi ), so as to reach Nacala also a shorter route - cost one billion U.S. dollars. All tracks have cape gauge and carry an axle load of 16 tonnes. CFM Central decreed 1984 on 61 diesel and 22 steam locomotives and eight rail cars. It also offers 3,330 freight and 84 passenger wagons available. Of these, probably only a fraction of the time to be ready.

CFM North

The CFM - North part of the port of Nacala, consisting of a railway line of 918 km and runs from Nacala to Nampula to Lichinga (formerly Vila Cabral ) on Lake Malawi. From Cuamba a branch leads to Malawi and connects to the network of the railway Malawi. This railway decreed 1984 on 30 diesel and 26 steam locomotives ( six of which 2004 are operational ), and six small railcars. For transport are 967 freight cars of various types and 44 passenger wagons available. The condition of the rails stretches is bad and only allows speeds of 25 km / h CFM North was privatized and is operated by the inverse gates Insitec group, which also operates the railways in Malawi.

Quelimane Mocaba route

The city of Quelimane is the terminus of a 120 km long railway line to Mocuba in the hinterland. Quelimane has a regional airport and has a navigable river port which also can create larger seagoing vessels producing sea transport connections to Maputo, South Africa and even directly to Europe. On the line next to freight and passenger transport takes place.
