The Nordkapp is a ship of the Hurtigruten ASA and travels to the Hurtigruten along the coast of Norway in regular service. The nearly identical sister ship of the " Nordnorge " is named after the North Cape, a towering from the Arctic Ocean slate plateau on the Norwegian island Magerøya.

History

Construction and commissioning

The Nordkapp was on the Norwegian shipyard Kvaerner Ulsteinvik as ( Kleven Verft A / S) on 24 November 1994 set in Ulsteinvik keel. The launching ceremony was held on 18 August 1995 instead, the delivery of the completed ship to the shipping company Ofotens above Vester Aalen Dampskibsselskap A / S ( OVDS ) on March 23, 1996. On the same day the Nordkapp was christened by Queen Sonja of Norway.

Use

On 2 April 1996, the Nordkapp took the line service on the Hurtigruten from Bergen to Kirkenes. Until the commissioning of the " Fram " in 2007 were in the winter half years, since 2005, Expeditions cruises in the southern hemisphere, especially in Antarctica performed.

Incident

Machinery and drive

The Nordkapp is equipped with a diesel-mechanical propulsion system. To improve maneuverability at low speeds, the Nordkapp is equipped with two Brunvoll - transverse thrusters in the bow and stern area.

Equipment

The 123-meter long ship can accommodate 691 passengers in 226 cabins and 481 beds. 45 parking spaces for cars can be reached via a loading dock at the port side.

The equipment of the ship has been put together by the Norwegian artist Karl Erik Harr. Numerous photographs and images on board to show the history of Hurtigruten.
